Entry Requirement: A New Jersey P-3 Certificate of Eligibility (CE)
This NJDOE-approved online, asynchronous program fulfills the coursework requirements to earn an initial certification to teach P-3 in New Jersey.

P-3 Alternate Route Program of Study
Phase I
Start the Teaching Methods course, which meets the NJDOE requirement for a 50-Hour Pre-Service Course for Alternate Route teachers.
Look for Employment
Phase II
The hiring district is responsible for enrolling you in the Provisional Teacher Process (PTP) and providing you with a mentor.
Teach under the guidance of a district-provided mentor while taking the below courses.
During the first year of teaching, successfully complete the two Field Experience courses.
While taking those Field Experience courses, begin the sequence of content courses, at your own pace. They must be completed within two years.
During Phase II, you need to achieve at least two years of effective ratings in a three-year period.
After satisfactorily completing those requirements, and the coursework with an overall 3.0 GPA, application is made to the DOE for a Standard License.

Anyone with a bachelor's degree in any subject, with any GPA, may enroll in NJCTL courses and/or a master's degree program. No prior mathematics or science background required.
NJCTL is an online graduate school of education duly authorized by the NJ Office of the Secretary of Higher Education with initial programmatic accreditation from the Association for Advancing Quality in Educator Preparation (AAQEP). NJDOE accepts NJCTL credits towards meeting certification requirements.
NJCTL has been recognized as a Candidate for Accreditation by WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC), 1080 Marina Village Parkway, Suite 500, Alameda, CA 94501, 510.748.9001. This status is a preliminary affiliation with the Commission awarded for a maximum period of five years. Candidacy is an indication that the institution is progressing toward Accreditation. Candidacy is not Accreditation and does not ensure eventual Accreditation. Learn more.
There are instances when credits from an institution that has institutional accreditation are needed. For instance, some districts require them for tuition reimbursement and/or salary advancement. Some DOEs outside of NJ require those credits to meet their certification requirements. If needed, credit transcription is available. Learn more.
NJCTL has exceptionally affordable tuition at $225 per graduate credit. There are never fees or textbook costs.
