Biology Program of Study

Phase I

Complete the following requirements before moving to Phase II:

  • Satisfy the CORE Basic Skills requirement by passing the test or using the SAT/ACT waiver.
  • Complete the mandated hygiene test at your county DOE office.
  • Pass the required Praxis II exam for Biology (#5235).
  • Pass the General Science Praxis II exam (#5435).

If needed, NJCTL has online, asynchronous courses to assist with these exams:

Phase II

Start the Teaching Methods course and simultaneously apply to the DOE for a Certificate of Eligibility (CE).

Upon earning a CE, apply for a teaching position, regardless of whether or not Teaching Methods has been completed.

This course meets the requirements of the NJ DOE for the 50-Hour Pre-Service Course for Alternate Route teachers.

After CE is issued, and the Teaching Methods course has been completed, move to Phase III.

Phase III

The hiring district is responsible for enrolling you in the Provisional Teacher Process (PTP) and providing you with a mentor.

Teach under the guidance of a district-provided mentor while taking the below courses.

During the first year of teaching, successfully complete the two Field Experience courses.

While taking those Field Experience courses, begin the sequence of content courses, at your own pace. They must be completed within two years.

During this Phase, you need to:

  • Achieve at least two years of effective ratings in a three-year period.

After satisfactorily completing those requirements, and the coursework with an overall 3.0 GPA, application is made to the DOE for a Standard License.
