This mathematically rigorous introductory course provides an understanding of chemistry and how to teach it to students. No prior chemistry required. Topics include atomic origins & structure, the periodic table, ionic bonding & compounds, covalent bonding & compounds, chemical reactions, intermolecular forces, mole calculations, stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, acids & bases, kinetics, and equilibrium.
This course prepares teachers with a background in chemistry for the Chemistry Praxis (5245) exam. It includes 7 modules, each containing problem solving notebooks; mastery questions with solutions; a discussion board, with questions addressed by instructors; and a unit test. An 8th module includes two full length Praxis-style tests.
