Meet Clarice Mayers-Uwumarogie
Inspiring Her Students With Physics
Clarice Uwumarogie is a dedicated educator and graduate of NJCTL's Physics Endorsement program, currently teaching physics at East Orange High School.
Clarice initially considered pursuing a career in medicine. Yet, her deep love for science and learning eventually led her to the classroom, where she’s now making a lasting impact on students in the very community where she grew up.
Despite being a strong high school student and class valedictorian, Clarice was hesitant to take physics. "Physics was considered a scary subject, and only a handful of students took it. I didn’t think it was for me," she explains. Even though she pursued research-based science in college, physics was the last course she took to complete her undergrad degree. However, when she finally took the course, she was surprised to find how much she liked it. "I couldn’t believe I had put it off for so long. By waiting, I robbed myself of something I really enjoyed."
Clarice’s decision to enroll in NJCTL’s Physics Endorsement program was driven by her desire to challenge herself and her genuine interest in the subject. “The graduate program was fantastic and the associated teaching materials are invaluable. I especially like using the Algebra-Based Physics materials. They not only help my students understand physics but also strengthen their math skills. Many students struggle with math, and through this program, I can help them build confidence and truly grasp the material."
Clarice also appreciates how NJCTL’s formative assessments allow her to adjust instruction based on real-time student progress, ensuring every student stays on track.
Clarice’s deep connection to her students at East Orange High School is evident in the strong relationships she has built with them. “Students here deserve high-quality teachers who genuinely care about them,” she says.
What particularly moves Clarice is when students, aware of her strong academic background, ask her why she chose to teach at a school like East Orange. “It tugs at my heart when they ask me that,” she reflects. “I always respond with, ‘What do you think you deserve?’”
As a teacher in a low-income, urban school district, Clarice understands the stereotypes her students face. “It’s easy for people to look down on us or label us as underperforming. But I know the dedication and hard work my colleagues put into their teaching. We truly care about these students, and that’s why I came back to teach in the community I was raised in.” For Clarice, teaching at East Orange isn’t just a job; it’s a mission to ensure that her students receive the quality education and support they deserve.
Clarice’s positive experience with NJCTL has sparked an interest in further learning. "If I have time, I’d love to earn another endorsement through NJCTL," she says with enthusiasm. Clarice’s dedication to her own learning and to her students is what makes her such an inspiring educator, and we’re excited to see where her journey leads next.
NJCTL's Master of Science in Teaching and Learning Physics is a 34-graduate credit program geared toward currently certified New Jersey Teachers. NJ teachers who pass the General Science and Physics Praxis exams also meet the requirements to earn a new physics endorsement. This program is 100% online and asynchronous.
