Meet Hannah Curran!
NJCTL's First MSTL Elementary Mathematics Graduate

NJCTL is proud to introduce Hannah Curran, our first Master of Science in Teaching and Learning (MSTL) Elementary Mathematics graduate!

Hannah has a background in special education and was eager to expand her career by adding a math certification. While she currently teaches special ed at her alma mater, Pompton High School, her true passion is working with middle school students. After passing the Middle School Mathematics Praxis exam with flying colors, she also earned her Middle School Mathematics endorsement, bringing her dream job within reach.

When Hannah first started, she was apprehensive about committing to a master’s program. But those doubts quickly vanished as she immersed herself in the learning process. “I learned so much and with this new certification, schools are constantly reaching out to me,” Hannah shared. “Talk about a career boost!”

One of the biggest takeaways for Hannah was the idea that true learning should be measured by how well you understand the content, not how fast you learn it. “It’s not about the speed of learning something, it’s about truly mastering it,” she explained. NJCTL’s approach made a huge difference, especially when preparing for the Praxis exam. “Even though there were times when I didn’t want to do the mastery exercises, they really helped me focus on the skills I needed. It had a big impact on my Praxis score!”

Hannah’s story is a testament to the power of perseverance. "Back in high school, I was never in an honors class, never in an advanced class, but I was definitely capable. It took a program like NJCTL to show me that. And now I can give that to my students. As a special ed teacher, I see that a lot of my students don’t have that confidence either. This program has given me the tools and a new perspective to give them the individualized support they need.”

Hannah was also impressed by the incredible support she received from NJCTL instructors, especially Audra, who was always there to help.

Hannah’s enthusiasm for NJCTL doesn’t stop with her own experience. Her fiancé loves physics and Hannah is encouraging him to dive into NJCTL’s physics program. “I think people are really seeing how beneficial this program is,” she said. "And with NJEA’s backing, it’s no surprise—having such a prominent union’s support is a huge endorsement!"

With the teacher shortage in New Jersey, Hannah believes NJCTL is making a big impact. "NJCTL is going to be a movement!"

NJCTL's Master of Science in Teaching and Learning Elementary Mathematics is a 30-graduate credit program geared toward currently certified New Jersey teachers. Teachers who pass the Middle School Mathematics Praxis exam also meet the requirements to earn a Middle School Mathematics endorsement. This program is 100% online and asynchronous.
