News from the Front: CTL STEM Workshops Take a Dynamic Approach to PD

Sixty-one teachers from throughout New Jersey came together in both Secaucus and the NJEA headquarters in Trenton recently for an exciting day of professional development.

Each workshop provided a broad overview, as well as hands-on training to implement a highly effective STEM initiative for K-5 classrooms. Using the Progressive Science Initiative® (PSI®) and the Progressive Mathematics Initiative® (PMI®), attending teachers learned how to create a dynamic learning environment for their students.

PSI and PMI feature free, open-source curricula including presentation slides, pacing guides, homework, labs and assessments. Click here for more info.

Highlights from the day included a collaborative engineering lab to protect a “bird!” Teachers were given 100 index cards, 24 inches of masking tape and 20 minutes to build a 24 inch high structure to protect the bird. Teachers also explored the CTL content and pedagogy, both of which they could easily add to their classrooms starting the first day of school.

This program was made possible through a generous contribution from Bayer USA Foundation.
