Emotional & Behavioral Supports SPED6230 

Teachers will learn about behavior disorders and practical strategies to support students in school. Key topics include behavior disorders in children and adolescents, classroom supports and interventions, behavior interventions within Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), behavioral analysis and data collection methods, and the impact of adverse childhood experiences.


Inclusive Classrooms SPED6240

Teachers will learn about inclusive education and inclusive practices. Specific topics include helping exceptional children & youth in the regular classroom, differentiated instruction in inclusive classrooms, creating and sustaining classroom communities, least restrictive environment, assistive technology, and transition planning, social communication intervention skills, and developmental communication skills of atypical children.


Curriculum for Students with Disabilities SPED6250

Teachers will learn about curriculum and curriculum development for children with special needs. Specific topics include curriculum planning, curriculum-based assessments, curriculum accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities, learning environments, and materials for students with disabilities.


Literacy & Numeracy Strategies for Students with Disabilities SPED6260 

Teachers will learn about best practices for literacy development for students with disabilities. Specific topics include strategies for the development of literacy, developmental reading instruction, teaching literacy, differentiated literacy instruction, literacy development in the elementary and middle school, literacy for students with disabilities, and diagnosis/assessment of reading difficulties for non-reading/literacy majors.


Assessments for Students with Disabilities SPED6270

Teachers will learn about different assessments and assessment practices for students with disabilities. Specific topics include mild, moderate and severe disabilities, survey of mild learning disabilities, assessing students with exceptional learning needs, standardized and functional assessments, psychological and educational assessments, and diagnosis assessments for IEP development.


Working with Families & Community Resources SPED6280

Teachers will learn about working with families and community resources for students with disabilities. Specific topics include working with families of children with disabilities, education and community resources, community services for students at risk and with exceptions, communication, collaborative partnerships, transition planning, program development, and agencies available for students with disabilities.
