Development of PMI

The PMI was developed with the aim of increasing the number of students successfully completing algebra by the end of 8th grade. The initiative began with the CTL’s Math Grants Program in which six middle schools form Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Using the Accuplacer to measure their impact, these schools saw increases in student mastery in arithmetic and algebra each year.

In 2009, the CTL adapted the successfully proven techniques found in its Progressive Science Initiative, a program which has led to order of magnitude improvement in Advanced Placement participation and passing rates. Using this approach, the six schools designed a mathematics curriculum spanning from Pre-Algebra through Algebra. These courses, along with all materials to support them, are now posted on the CTL site for any student or teacher.

Training for teachers began in the summer of 2010. As a result, nine districts have adopted this approach and are piloting the program this year.
